I have learned over the years, that fueling adequately before a big weekend of workouts, is very important. My body needs energy to perform and I need to prepare it ahead of time.
Before a big weekend of workouts, I typically up my food intake for a couple of days. On big weekends, I burn a lot of calories, and it is often not possible to replace those calories, in real time. I need some energy reserves.
As my Friday night meal, I will often make a home-made pizza. This is a double bonus, because it not only allows me to indulge in some ‘bad’ food, but it also provides a lot of calories. Tonight was no different; I made pizza.
This weekend I have a long bike ride tomorrow, that includes several high effort intervals. On Sunday, my long run also includes some higher intensity work. I am scheduled to work out for well over five hours over the two days. I will likely burn something like 3,500 calories, just from working out. I need to get those calories from somewhere.
So remember, if you have a heavy training load ahead of you, fueling adequately ahead of time is very important.
