As a USAT Certified Coach, I must re-apply for certification every two years. This is not just a simple case of re-applying and paying a fee. USAT Coaching requires a number of items be completed.
Firstly, USAT requires that each coach stays compliant on several certifications. I need to maintain a ‘green light’ on a National Center for Safety Initiatives background check. I also need to complete annual training in SafeSport, to ensure all abuse is eliminated from sport. Finally, I need to have a valid certificate, showing that I am fully trained in First Aid, CPR and AED.
In addition to the above certifications, I also have to show that I am continuing to learn as a coach. I demonstrate this by earning Continuous Education Unit (CUE) credits. Continuous Education Units are triathlon specific education courses approved by USAT. I have to earn 12 credits over the two year period between coaching re-certification.
Being a triathlon coach is a very satisfying thing for me. It also comes with responsibilities however, and the USAT Coaching Certification process provides me with a solid background for this. I have enjoyed the learning process so much, that I suspect I will take more than the required twelve classes over the next two years.
For now however, my re-certification application is in. I should hear back from USAT within the next few weeks.
