Towards the end of big training blocks, there typically comes a time when training fatigue sets in. There comes a day when you are just flat and tired, during your workouts. Today was that day for me.
I rode my bike outside for an hour and a half this morning. The ride went quite well, but when pushing any decent amount of power, I could feel that my legs were just tired. Not so tired that I couldn’t complete the intended workout, but tired enough for me to notice for the whole ride.
This afternoon, the situation on my 35 minute, Zone 2 run, was even more pronounced. My legs were feeling tired before I even started to run. It would have been easy for me to not run. Experience told me however, that I would be OK. That turned out to be true. My legs felt terrible at the beginning of the run, but much better at the end.
Training fatigue is a perfectly normal phenomenon. In fact, for me, it is a good sign that I have worked hard and likely made some significant gains during a particular block of training.
The key now, is to manage the fatigue for the rest of this week, before I begin my taper for Oceanside. That is when I will really begin to unload the fatigue. For now, I just have a few more hard workouts to get through.
