Tracking Athletes In Races When You’re A Coach

As a coach, you get invested in your athletes.  You see all of the hard that they put in day in and day out. So tracking athletes when they are racing, can be quite stressful.  You just want them to have a good day.

I have an athlete racing at Ironman California today.  He is out there on the course, as I write this blog post just after midnight. I have been tracking him all day.  The moment he completed the bike segment was huge.  I am always concerned about athletes completing the bike segment.  It is the one segment where something beyond the control of the athlete, can significantly impact their race.

For this particular race, the time zone difference is tough for me. I am torn between going to bed or following my athlete via the tracker.  I think I will go to bed and set an alarm for my athlete’s expected finish time.  I really want to see him finish.

Tracking athletes is sometimes tough, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
