Our son called in at the grocery store, on his way home from the gym this afternoon. He had a huge smile on his face, as he emptied his grocery bag. He pulled out a paper wrapped piece of meat, and opened it to reveal a two and half pound tomahawk steak.
The steak was great looking piece of meat and it was enormous. My wife joked that it was the size of a typical Sunday roast, that families eat in England. I asked our son, if he planned to eat it over a couple of days. He replied that this was his dinner for this evening.
I know the sound of eating a couple of pounds of meat, in one sitting, sounds incredibly excessive, but our son needs that amount of food. The reason he needs this amount of food is that he is a competitive, Olympic-style weightlifter, who lifts in the 109kg category. He is a big guy and he trains to puts hundreds of kilograms of weight over his head, every day. His diet is appropriate to his needs.
Nutrition and diet are critical, if you want to perform at your best. You also need to match your nutrition to your specific sport. The diet of a weightlifter is different to the diet of a triathlete. As I triathlete, I don’t need a two and half pound steak for dinner, but the mouthful I did have, was beautiful.
