This Threshold Interval Run Required Digging Deep

Yesterday I wrote about a really tough bike workout. Well, today’s threshold interval run was even tougher.  I had to dig really deep to push through the last few intervals.

I find hard run workouts, to be much more challenging than hard bike workouts.  This is because they are much more challenging on my cardiovascular system.  Moving all of my bodyweight while running, requires much more effort than just pushing peddles hard on the bike.

The run workout was as follows:

  • 15 minutes Easy Pace Warm Up
  • 3 x 3 Minutes at Threshold Effort with 1 Minute Recovery (Walk)
  • 5 Minutes Zone 2 Run
  • 3 x 3 Minutes at Threshold Effort with 1 Minute Recovery (Walk)
  • 4 x 30 Seconds at Very High Turnover with 1 Minute Recovery (Jogging)
  • 10 Minutes Easy Pace Cool Down

I was very glad that the recovery from the threshold intervals was a walk.  I was breathing very hard.  With the warmer temperatures, this session resulted in several ‘peak heart rate’ records for the year.  I also ran my fastest 400 meters of the year. I was working really hard on this threshold interval run today.

Happily, tomorrow is a much easier day, workout wise.  I have a bike ride, but it is all in Zone 1 and Zone 2.  I will be glad to give my heart and lungs a rest.
