I drove to LA Fitness this morning, excited to do my first swim workout in almost a month. As I walked into the gym, I glanced at the pool. The pool was empty and no lifeguard was present. My heart sank, I knew the pool was closed.
A sign at the front desk confirmed my suspicion. It read… “Pool closed for repairs – Re-opens on Monday”. I obviously had no choice but to turn around and go home. It was going to be one of those days, where I needed to adapt.
I had a swim and a short run on my schedule today. The run was supposed to be a 30 minutes easy pace run, with a few strides thrown in. After seeing that the pool was closed, I decided that I would change that run significantly.
It rained all day and I had wait until it was quite late for that to subside. It was early evening, by the time I made it to the park for my run. The clouds were breaking up and the sun was trying hard to make an appearance. I started my run with the goal of doing an easy paced run for an hour. This was double the time of the planned workout.
After easing into the run for about ten minutes, I was feeling really good, so I decided to change the run yet again. I chose to push my effort and do a tempo run. What a great decision. I ran tempo for the next five miles and it felt so good.
Sometimes it does you good to adapt and ‘go with the flow’. Today was one of those days and I am so happy about it. I think that I had one of my best runs for quite some time.
