The ‘Phil Was Antsy’ Half Marathon

The weather today was even more beautiful than yesterday.  The problem was, that I had a number of things that had to be done around the house.  These were things that I needed to prioritize over working out.

I spent all morning and early afternoon, helping my wife finish up painting our sun room.  Together we got it done and it looks great.  I also needed to do a few tasks in the yard, so by the time that was finished, it was already mid-afternoon.  I still had time for the run that I had planned on doing, but I didn’t have time to relax before heading out.

My workout was another ‘choice workout’, so I could get to pick what I did.  I knew I was going to run, but I didn’t know how far.  As I worked around the house, I got more and more antsy to run.  The thought of running a half marathon had been swirling around in my head all day.  I decided that I was going to do just that, run a half marathon around the lake at the local park.

I started the run at a reasonably brisk pace, but it felt like a high zone 2 / low zone 3 type effort.  I felt comfortable holding this pace, so I ran at this effort level, for pretty much the whole run.  With about a mile and half to go, I hit a section that was slightly downhill and so I decided at that point, to pick up the pace a little.  I held that higher pace until I reached the end of my run.

I knew that this run would be my fastest half marathon of 2020, simply because I have hardly run any training runs of that distance this year.  What I was shocked to learn however, was that this run was my fifth fastest half marathon ever!  Three of the faster runs were in races.

How fast did I go?  Well I typically hide that data because the number is only important to me; I am not into comparisons. Some people really want to know however, so if you want greater insight into my training, you could always follow me on Strava.
