The Mixed Relay Triathlon At The Olympic Games Did Not Disappoint

I had a busy day today, but was able to fit in two workouts.  I did a 40 minute Zone 2 run and a pool swim of 3,800 yards.  Having completed a bunch of yard work, I settled down to watch the Mixed Relay Triathlon, live from Tokyo.

I have been looking forward to this event all week.  One reason was because, I thought the team from my home country, Team Great Britain, had an excellent chance to win Gold.

The race evolved nicely as it progressed.  Eventual medalists, Team GB and Team USA, were in the front right from the start with Katie Zaferes and Jessica Learmonth leading at the end of the first leg.  One of the favorites, Team France, was over thirty seconds back, but they had saved their best athletes for last.

Team GB built a slight lead over legs two and three, and handed the race over to Alex Yee.  Alex is a phenomenal runner, but his swim and bike were not enough to prevent Vincent Luis of France catching him before that final run started.  Fortunately, Alex was able to stay with Vincent until the final T2, and then ran away to win Gold for Team GB.  Morgan Pearson of the USA completed a fantastic run leg, eventually overtaking Luis to get Silver for the USA.

Being English, it was great to see Team GB win the Mixed Relay Triathlon. This capped a superb games for Great Britain in triathlon, where GB athletes also won Silver medals in the individual men’s and women’s events.
