Taking My Training Regimen One Day At A Time

I woke up early this morning and was a little tired. I went downstairs and made myself a coffee, hoping it would pick me up a little.  As I was drinking that coffee, the sun began to rise above the horizon. It was a beautiful sunrise and it got me thinking.  That sun rises every day. Each day is a new one.  I thought to myself, live in the moment. Take one day at a time.

Taking one day at a time, is important when training.  It is easy to look back, at missed opportunities or workouts, and get down. Looking too far ahead can make things seem daunting… “I have so much work to do before my next race”.

If you look only at the one day however, things start to seem manageable.  It’s a fresh start and you have the possibility of the day’s workouts being great.  Looking at a single day’s worth of workouts, often enables you to believe you can everything done.  The little bite size chunks of working out, one day at a time, eventually add up to something big.

Until I saw that sunrise first thing this morning, I was dreading today’s bike workout. It was a tough workout, with a lot of hard, short intervals. I got it done though, and stayed motivated enough to get to the pool for an extra swim workout this afternoon.

Looking back, today turned out to be a fantastic day.  The sun will rise again tomorrow and hopefully I can learn again, to live in the moment, and just keep moving forward.
