Spend Your Time Focusing On What You Can Control

I woke up this morning to find snow covering everything outside.  It is supposed to be Spring, not Winter. I quickly remembered however, that I cannot control the weather, including the weather during my races.  It was a great reminder, to spend time, focusing on what you can control.

What you can control, is your reaction to the weather and this is especially true during races.  Unusual weather conditions have ruined many an athlete’s race.  This is because they have let the weather dictate their reaction, rather than the other way around.  Thinking about possible weather conditions, and how you will react if they occur, is critical race preparation.

If it is windy, how will you handle choppy water during the swim?  Will you let it get to you, or will you embrace the challenge?  What about wind on the bike?  Will that headwind wear you down mentally, or will you stay focused on making yourself as aero as possible?

What about super hot weather?  How will you try to keep your core temperature down?  Will you adjust your hydration strategy?  What about super cold weather?

As I mentioned, it is critical that you try to visualize every possibility, and how you will react in a positive manner, if unusual conditions arise.  That way, you will not be surprised in your race and you will be better prepared to move forward.  By thinking about your reactions, you will be focusing on what you can control, and not on what you cannot.
