Over time, I have become more deliberate about choosing my races and try not to get caught up in emotion and sign up for something on a whim. I went a little against this philosophy recently because I wanted to try something different in 2020. After seeing numerous, amazing photographs of various SwimRun races, I thought that these races looked really cool and I made the decision to do a SwimRun in 2020.
After a little research, SwimRun NC turned out to be the perfect race. It’s a classic SwimRun race and part of the whole Ötillö events series, as one of their merit races. The race is in late October, so I could do it “for fun” at the end of my regular Triathlon season. Having set my heart on this race there were just a couple of ‘issues’ that were potentially in my way. I needed a partner because the races are two-person team based and assuming I overcame that hurdle, our team would then need to convince the race organizers we were experienced enough to be able to participate. The race directors evaluate entrants to make sure they are qualified enough to participate from a safety perspective; the races are tough.
Finding a partner turned out to be easy. I asked a C26 teammate and she instantly agreed. Today was the day, we found out the answer to the second question … would we get accepted?
We applied to race when registration opened at 8am this morning, carefully listing all of our race results from the past 24 months. At 2:10pm this afternoon an email arrived from the race director … “Thanks for your application into our 2020 SwimRun NC. We have accepted your team”.
I have to say, I feel honored that we have been accepted into such an amazing race. It was a huge emotional ‘high’ and it carried over into my Long Run this afternoon. I had a super relaxed run, enjoying the scenery at my local park and thinking of the great scenery in NC, that I will hopefully experience next Fall.
Some days just go well. Today was one of those days!
Quick footnote : My website is pretty basic right now. I chose to start sharing first, rather than spending time making the website complete before launching the blog. I’m looking forward to building the website over time into a useful resource for you .. just another part of my ‘life’ that you will get to read about.
