Sharing A Tip At The Pool

After work today, I headed to LA Fitness to get my swim workout done.  While getting ready, I did my usual trick of prepping my swim goggles, by spraying the lenses with diluted baby shampoo.  In my experience, this is the simplest way to prevent fogging.  Baby shampoo is the best kind of shampoo because it doesn’t irritate the eyes at all.

As I put my goggles down to finish getting ready, the guy getting changed next to me, asked me if I wore the goggles while swimming in the pool.  It seemed like a strange question, but I answered ‘yes’.  He then said, “don’t they get all fogged up”?  I said that I use baby shampoo to prevent that from happening and the guy’s face lit up.

It turns out that he was recovering from bypass surgery, that he had six months ago and his doctor had told him to swim for exercise.  He said he loved swimming when he was young and that since starting again, he had gradually gotten to the point where he was now swimming about half a mile a day.  The problem was, he wasn’t enjoying it much.  He said he couldn’t use goggles … “they keep getting fogged up”.  Hence, the reason for his interest in me and my goggles.  We both finished getting ready and as he was leaving he said “I’m off to the store to buy some baby shampoo”!

It’s amazing how a simple, five minute conversation with a stranger can make your day.  Those few words completely changed how I felt about my swim tonight.  I got into the water super happy and proceeded to nail my workout.

Quick footnote :  My website is pretty basic right now.  I chose to start sharing first, rather than spending time making the website complete before launching the blog.  I’m looking forward to building the website over time into a useful resource for you .. just another part of my ‘life’ that you will get to read about.
