Having spent all week writing about various things that I do to prepare for race day, I thought that today, I should give an update on me. Two weeks ago, I wrote about a gout flare up, which was stopping me from running. Since that time I have not done a single run work out. So the question is … will I be ready for race day?
The bottom line is, that I do think I will be ready for my race in Chattanooga on May 23rd. I say that because, even though I am still not running, I am making good progress. The gout has disappeared and I am now only dealing with the after affects.
Those after affects are still painful, but they are things that I feel sure can be addressed within two weeks. The main issue I currently have, is bruising and swelling around the joints of my big toe. The area is no longer bright red from the gout and is looking much better.
Fortunately, I am still able to swim and ride my bike on the trainer. This, together with a huge base of fitness, means that as long as I am healthy, I think I can race well. I am also encouraged by the lesson provided by Tim O’Donnell at Kona in 2019. Tim finished second that year, after not being able to run for seven weeks leading into the race.
There are always challenges in a triathlon journey. This is just another of those challenges. As long as I am ready for race day, all will be good.
