It always seems to happen when I get close to my race. Some kind of niggling injury appears, right as I start my taper period.
Getting a small niggle always leaves me in a quandary. Do I push through it and see if it improves? Or, do I fully rest to try and get over it quickly. It is not an easy decision.
This time I have chosen complete rest. I was planning to run yesterday, but chose not to. I am also scheduled to run tomorrow, and have already decided that I will not run.
This is the route I have gone, because my race is still ten days away. My thinking is that by aggressively resting this week, I should be able to quickly recover from the niggle. I will then be able to get in a little running next week. I already have the fitness to race. I just need a few short runs ahead of race day to stay sharp.
To help with recovery, I am icing the injury several times a day and taking an over the counter, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug. I am also trying to sleep as much as possible. This approach is working, as I already feel better today.
It is important that I stay positive. An injury so close to my race is always concerning, but there is still plenty of time for me to recover.
