With my pool still closed, I have been swimming in the lake at the local state park. This has been working quite well for me, until today.
With open water swimming as my only option, I am dependent on the weather. As I finished work this evening, and got ready to head to the lake, I quickly checked the weather radar. I could see a line of storms moving across the area, but there was a chance that they would pass to the north of the lake that I swim at.
I decided it was worth the chance of driving to the lake, to see if the storms did indeed pass to the north. This was not a trivial thing, as it takes me about 45 minutes to drive to that lake. When I arrived at the lake, the sun was still shining, but there were black clouds building up to the west. It didn’t look good. Ten minutes later, the monsoon like storm arrived!
Another quick check of the radar told me that my chances of getting a swim done, were very slim. There was a break in the weather coming, but then another line of storms was due about thirty minutes later. I took a few photographs and drove home.
Today’s swim workout was the first workout that I have missed in over four months. There was nothing I could do about it, so today became a rest day. Some triathletes might get upset or frustrated, that a really long workout streak, was broken up by weather. For me however, it’s just the opportunity to start another streak….
