Just over a week ago, I wrote about the various Achilles issues, that I have been having this year. In order to minimize any chance of aggravating the injury, I stopped all run training on June 30th. My first run in July, will be on Sunday, during my race.
These past ten days or so, have been a real balancing act. I have done some training, to try and keep my fitness, but mostly I have been focussing on trying to get to the start line as healthy as I can. I am not going to be 100%, but I do believe that I will be close enough, to be able to perform well at Musselman.
I know that the Achilles issue is not a concern for the swim and bike portions of the race. My hope is that 56 miles on the bike, will warm up my Achilles enough, that I can begin the run, relatively pain free. My experience has been that once warmed up, I can run and the Achilles pain stays quite manageable. The only thing I am uncertain about, is if this holds true for race pace and for 13.1 miles.
I did discuss with my coach, ‘trying out’ the injury with a short run either tomorrow or Saturday. We concluded that additional rest, gives me the best chance of recovery in time for Sunday. So my first run in July ,will be a half marathon at race pace. Hopefully, it all works out.
