I still haven’t completed a run in 2020, but I’m getting closer. This evening I “ran” in the pool after my swim.
My injuries have recovered enough, that I came up with the idea to re-start my ‘running’, by aqua jogging for a couple of weeks. The pool that I use for swimming is unfortunately, not deep enough for me to aqua jog in water only. I therefore resorted to a method that minimized impact on my stress-fractured foot.
I used two pull buoys to give me some flotation and ‘ran’ along the floor of the pool. I was able to use a minimum of interaction with the pool floor, to get the forward motion I needed. I feel that what I did, is really safe for my healing stress fracture. I think my technique needs some work, but I did do 20 minutes of exercise, and I enjoyed it.
So, for the next two weeks, I am going to aqua jog after every swim. Hopefully I can build up the time for each workout, such that when I am once again comfortable with regular running, I’ll be in decent shape to do so.
This is a great example of focusing on what I can do, and not on what I cannot do. This is such an important mental thing to do during a long recovery from injuries.
Quick footnote : My website is pretty basic right now. I chose to start sharing first, rather than spending time making the website complete before launching the blog. I’m looking forward to building the website over time into a useful resource for you .. just another part of my ‘life’ that you will get to read about.
