I was on the bike trainer for almost an hour and a half this evening. That is a long time, and I find that my mind begins to wander. Inevitably, the topic of my upcoming race at Ironman 70.3 Musselman entered my mind. I did more thinking about my race plan.
As I was on my bike, I started to think about the bike leg of the race. In the same race last year, I had my fastest ever 70.3 ride. That was because my coach and I decided to go all in on the bike. I had come into the race with an injury, that meant I had not run for several weeks. Our race strategy was to go as hard as possible on the bike, and hang on for the run. It worked out well and you can read about it in my race report.
So on the bike this evening, I started to think about trying reproduce my bike effort from my race last year. The course this year is slightly different, but not enough to make a major difference in elevation or even the overall route. Will I be able to push hard on the bike like last year, and still be able to produce a great run? This is something, I need to discuss with my coach.
I am sure I will do a lot more thinking on race strategy in the coming days. I am feeling good about how my training is going, and naturally, this has me feeling good about the upcoming race.
