Mentally Drained But I Am Very Happy

I am struggling to write my blog this evening.  This is because I am tired, both physically and mentally.  It was a long day at work, but I still managed to also complete two very demanding workouts.

My workday started early again, which meant delaying my run workout, until lunchtime.  The good news about that, is that I was able to run in almost perfect conditions.  Temperature was about 50’F and it was sunny. I only had to deal with a little bit of wind, and that was only a headwind on one street.

My run workout was a doozy.  After a 15 minute warm up, I had 4 x 5 minute intervals at threshold pace on two minutes recovery.  Running at threshold pace is tough.  At threshold pace, I am running at about 90% effort.  That degree of effort, really works my lungs, as well as my legs.

Today however, was one of those days where I felt quite strong.  I got through the intervals without feeling like I was dying at the end of them.  My pace well fairly consistent throughout each interval.  I also ‘negative split’ the intervals; each one was slightly faster than the previous one.

After another busy afternoon working, I headed to the pool for my swim workout.  My session was a strength session.  The main set that I did, was 15 x 100 yards at Zone 3 effort with paddles.  That amount of swimming with paddles, really worked out my arms and my shoulders.  Nonetheless, I did well and was able to maintain a consistent pace for all fifteen intervals.

So all in all it was a very long day, with lots of mental and physical effort.  My workouts went really well however, so I have that great feeling where I am both very tired but also very happy.  I love days like this.
