Juggling Workouts Around To Try And Stay On Track

When I woke up yesterday morning, my right eye was very irritated.  I recognized the feeling as the beginning of a case of pink-eye.  Sure enough, my eye is totally pink today. To avoid aggravating the eye, I am avoiding swimming. This means juggling workouts around, to try and stay on track.

I was supposed to swim and do a small run yesterday. Knowing that I couldn’t swim, I decided to move my Friday workouts to Sunday, and bring forward the weekend workouts by a day.  I therefore did my two hour long ride on the trainer yesterday and scheduled my long run for today.

Doing my long run on a Saturday is a good thing. It means I can go run with our local running group.  My wife and I signed up to do that last night. Unfortunately, my eye hurt a lot overnight and I didn’t sleep well.  When the alarm clock went at 6am, I told my wife that I was too tired to go run. She went to the group run on her own.

After a couple of hours of extra, somewhat restless sleep, I got up feeling much better.  I knew I could still get my long run in, but needed to make a choice; run outside or run inside.  It was 20’F outside and I thought that this would further irritate my eye.  An inside run was my best choice.

I have not been a big fan of the treadmill. I cannot remember ever running on it for over an hour.  This afternoon, I ran on the treadmill for 75 minutes.  I honestly think it might be my longest ever treadmill run.  It was not a bad run because I was distracted by watching my team, Aston Villa, play their Premier League game.  I think my heart rate spiked a little when they scored twice at the end of the game to force a draw.

Given the ongoing state of my eye, I will not be swimming tomorrow after all.  Luckily I did an extra swim session earlier this week, and assuming I get my run done tomorrow, I will still be able to stay on track with this week’s workouts.
