It Was A Sea Of Pink And Blue At The Group Run

I joined the City of Bridges Run Club this morning, for their weekly long run through the streets of Pittsburgh.  The run this week was a little different as we all wore pink and blue to honor Eliza Fletcher.

Eliza Fletcher was abducted and murdered while out doing her routine run last week. She was wearing pink and blue that day, and that is why we all wore those colors on the group run today.

Too many women are either attacked or worse, while out doing something good for their lives.  Just like me they choose to exercise on a regular basis, but unlike me they are often forced to do extraordinary things through fear of being attacked.  Things like never running alone, carrying pepper spray or alarm and eyeing every person they come across with suspicion.

As a guy who runs, I don’t feel the need to do these things, but my wife does.  It is sad and it is wrong. I have no idea how to fix it.  There are some bad people out there and I wish we could get rid of them.

I was proud to wear pink and blue today, to honor Eliza. I wish for all the world I didn’t have to, but it was the least I could do for her and her family.

RIP Eliza.

Thank you, Phil. It’s important to have men as our allies. It was wonderful to see many of our male runners also wearing pink and blue.
