It Is Time For My Training Schedule To Be A Lot More Flexible

My wife and I are about to leave our son at home, and head out on a three week road trip to Colorado. My big race of the year is done, but I don’t want to lose all the fitness that I have worked so hard to get.  This means that while we are away, my training schedule will need to be flexible.

For one, I am not taking my bike on this trip.  This means I will have no bike workouts for over three weeks.  I do plan to run and swim while we are traveling. I am not sure about access to pools however, so who knows when I will be able to get in a swim workout.

By default therefore, I will be doing a lot of running.  While I can run pretty much every day, I do need to be careful about how that might impact my body.  Running is hard on the body and I need to be careful and not get injured.

One thing about Colorado however, is that the scenery will likely be stunning.  I am planning to try a fair bit of trail running.  This will not only be good for my fitness, but it will help for my one remaining race of the season, SwimRun NC.

I am looking forward to the trip. Having spent such a large amount of the year following a very structured training schedule, it is good to change things up for a while.  I think it is good for all athletes to shake things up a little during the “off season”.  How do things change for you this time of year?
