On Instagram today, I have seen a lot of posts with the reference “Throwback Thursday”. These are posts, where people post an image from the past. As I looked at the various posts, I was reminded of my first endurance race. I was 51 years old when I did my first half marathon and am living proof, that it is never too late to start your endurance journey.
Six months prior to that first half marathon, I could barely run a mile. I made a commitment however, and through consistent training, I successfully finished that first race. It has been an incredible journey, since I crossed that first finish line in May 2014.
I have continued to be as consistent with my training as possible. There have been ups and downs along the way, with the downs being mostly associated with injuries. All along however, I have had fun and endurance sports, have since become, a huge part of my life.
You can see all of my race results here. Back when I was struggling to run a mile, who would have guessed that I would become a four time Ironman. I know I didn’t foresee it at the time. That is the beauty of training consistently however; over time, it builds.
I am not alone in starting my endurance journey later in life. I have several teammates with very similar stories. All of us would agree, it is never too late to start. Have you started yours yet?
