I have been on vacation in England for two weeks now, and it has therefore been that long, since I last rode a bike. With a key race only seven weeks away, is this a major issue?
Obviously, going for over two weeks without riding a bike, is not ideal. It is however, not the end of the world. I have been running quite a bit while here in England and also swam this week. This means that although I have probably lost a little bit of fitness, I haven’t lost a lot. I am pretty sure, that when I get back on my bike next week, I will be able to perform close to where I did two weeks ago.
Taking a two week break from cycling, also has its benefits. The biggest of these is that I am now really excited to get back into the basement and onto my bike next week. Even though I will only be riding my trainer, I am sure it will feel great.
Would I have liked to have been training on my bike while away? Sure I would, but this is a great example of how triathlon sometimes needs to take a back seat, to other things in my life. I have been visiting family, who I haven’t seen ‘in person’ for three years. Within that context, a few weeks without riding a bike, means basically nothing.
As I wrote about a month ago, triathlon needs to fit into your life, not the other way around.
