It has been an interesting couple of days for me. I woke up yesterday with a very painful right knee. Not the ideal feeling, first thing in the morning, when it is only ten days until your next race.
I think the issue with my knee is a reoccurrence of something I had two years ago. Fortunately, this time around it is much less severe, and I have been smart in reacting to it quickly and effectively.
Yesterday, when I realized how my knee was feeling, I immediately decided to not workout. I was supposed to do one last, large brick workout, as part of the training block going into Musselman. Doing a three hour ride, and then a run off the bike, would not have helped my knee at all. Instead, I rested all day and iced my knee regularly.
I also chose not to share this news on my blog yesterday, because I wanted to wait to see if there was any improvement today. The good news is, that the knee was indeed much better this morning. It was not completely pain free, but much better than yesterday.
As I keep a very detail log of my training, I was also able to look back at comments from last time this thing happened to my knee. I discovered that swimming was fine last time, and easy biking seemed to help loosen the knee issue up.
So today, I went to the pool for a swim and this afternoon, I spent a couple of hours on my bike at the park. As I write this, my knee seems to be no worse. Hopefully it will continue to improve overnight.
The next couple of days will be interesting. If I had to race tomorrow, I think I could do it, but fortunately I don’t race until a week on Sunday. That should hopefully be plenty of time, to get things back in order.
