It was a long day yesterday. We woke up at 3.45am to begin our day spectating Ironman 70.3 Ohio. After the race, we drove back to Pittsburgh, getting home at almost 9.00pm. It was therefore not surprising, that I was tired today. When it came to working out, I struggled to find motivation.
I had a swim session and a forty minute run to do. It was a beautiful day, so I chose to do my swim late morning, at our neighborhood pool. I felt sluggish during the workout, but I got it done. After my swim, I spent a few minutes relaxing in the sun by the pool, trying to recharge my batteries. This seemed to work. My mood improved and I headed home for lunch.
Given the day was getting hot, I decided I would do my run on the treadmill. As the afternoon wore on however, I got less and less interested in doing my run. I procrastinated like crazy. Even after my wife had done her run on the treadmill, I still didn’t feel like running.
Then, late afternoon, I started watching the Women’s Triathlon at the Olympic Games. As I watched the women contest a great swim and as a lead pack of six athletes were hammering away on the bike, I got my mojo back. I quickly got changed into my running gear, went into the basement and watched the race while on my treadmill. As Flora Duffy, pulled away on the run, I too found a spring in my step and I ended up having a great workout.
I guess it doesn’t matter where, or how, you find motivation to workout, as long as somehow, you do. For me today, the motivation came from watching the best women triathletes in the world. It was a good thing.
