If you want to get better at something, it really helps to do it a lot. For this reason, I want to swim more this winter; a lot more.
Doing a lot of swimming is time consuming. Not only do you have the actual time spent in the pool, you also have to add in the time spent driving to the pool and the time getting changed and showered. It adds up.
Three weeks ago, I wrote about how the pool where I normally swim was closed, and how it meant a much longer drive to go swim. Well, three weeks later and my pool is still closed for repairs. It is really frustrating.
The past couple of weeks, I have managed a few swims and have averaged about 7,500 yards of swimming each week. This is a decent amount, but to get better I need to swim more.
I would like to swim at least double the distance that I have been doing lately. To do that, I need to go to the pool more often. With the extended drive time involved however, I cannot justify the time to reach my goal.
You might think that I could double my swim distance by just swimming longer each time that I do go to the pool. The problem with that approach is, that I am not yet strong enough to keep my swim form. With extra long sessions, I end up swimming with bad form. This is not a good thing because it reinforces bad habits.
I am told my local pool might be fixed this week. I am not holding my breath, but I sure hope it is.
