I always try to do a run on New Year’s Day and this year was no different. I had planned to run for about 45 minutes, at some time during the day, and I wanted to run outside. The problem was, the weather was not cooperating.
The weather was dry and cold first thing, but I was a little late getting out of bed and by the time I had breakfast, the weather had turned. It had started to rain, but no ordinary rain, it was freezing rain. I could see mini icicles forming on all the trees outside and I knew that meant that the road surfaces would be too slick to run on.
I really didn’t want to do my run on the treadmill, so I decided to check the weather radar. Maybe the temperatures would warm up a little and it would stop raining, at some point during the day. My wish looked like it might happen, but not until very late in the day. I decided to wait out the rain. If my weather forecast turned out wrong, I could always still do a treadmill run in the evening.
About 4.00pm, I looked outside and it had stopped raining. I went outside to check the surfaces of the sidewalk and the road, to see if they were slick… they were not. I was going to be able to do my run outside after all.
I had a really nice, relaxed run. The temperature was not too bad and even though I needed my headlight at the end of the run, everything worked out great. So my New Year is off to a running start, which means I am already ahead of last year. I couldn’t run at this time last year, because of a stress fracture in my foot.
Tomorrow is a bike day. That session will be indoors, but that’s OK. I am used to riding the trainer at this time of year.
