I has been 236 days since I last did a swim in a pool. Over the summer, I did manage to swim a little up at the lake, but overall I feel like I have barely swum at all this year.
The pool at my local LA Fitness gym has been open for a while, but I delayed my return to swimming, to focus on my trail run. I decided today, that I could no longer put off getting back in the pool.
I was definitely not excited at the prospect of getting in the pool and swimming. Swimming is by far the most challenging sport within triathlon for me. I have to work hard to develop a decent swim and I knew that this session was going to be ugly.
I chose to do a simple 10 x 200 yard steady swim. In the end most of the swim felt OK, but my pace was really slow and towards the end, I started to get fatigued. I was right… I have a long road ahead to regain my swim fitness.
The big thing that I achieved today, was that I got back in the pool and got the first swim done. Now I know where I am at, and now I know how much work I have ahead of me. I have a feeling that swimming will feel like a chore for the next week or two, but once I start to get a little stronger, all will be good.
