A week ago I made a blog post about comfort on the bike, where I wrote about how my aero pads were uncomfortable. Over the past few weeks, as my rides have gotten longer, I have also noticed that my feet are hurting. In fact they were quite painful by the end of my rides.
On my long rides, my feet have a tendency to swell a little. As this was happening, I became aware that I was getting hot spots on my small toe and on the outside of my big toe joint. Basically, my feet were swelling and the shoes I was wearing, were not wide enough. It has gotten so bad, that I am starting to develop corns on my little toes.
This was frustrating to me, because I had spent a lot of money on some very good cycling shoes. These particular shoes were supposed to be very adjustable, but clearly they were not adjustable enough.
I therefore made the decision to invest in yet another pair of cycling shoes. I did quite a bit of research about which brands were typically a little wider fit. It turns out, that a pair of shoes I was very interested in, the S-Works 7’s, were typically a wider fit. What’s more, they were also available in a wide version, to give me even more width in the shoe.
So, tomorrow I will get to try out these new shoes. They are definitely much wider than my old shoes. This was another expensive purchase, but if I achieve better comfort on the bike, it will have been worth spending the money.
