I am now very close to finalizing the races that will be in my initial 2022 plan. As part of that plan, I designated one particular race as my “A” race. That decision had some knock-on effects for other races.
An “A” race, is the most important race of your season. It is a race where you are fully focused on having your best performance of the year. As a result of its importance, it has a significant impact on your training plan, especially in the last few weeks leading up to race day.
In looking at the races that I was considering for my 2022 plan, it was clear that after choosing my “A” race, one race had to go. That race was an Ironman 70.3 race and it went because it was too close to the date of my “A” race. It was scheduled only four weeks prior to the big one.
Four weeks ahead of an “A” race, I will right in the middle of a critical training block. Interrupting that block for a big race like a 70.3, just doesn’t make sense. It would be too disruptive and likely result in too much fatigue.
I will share my plans for next year on Sunday. In doing so, I will also disclose my thought process and which race I decided to walk away from.
