I Bought Two Sizes Of Trail Shoes To Get The Right Size

After completing my recent ultramarathon, I blogged about the after effects.  I talked about my trail running shoes being too small and how that caused some issues with my toenails.  I know I need bigger trail running shoes, but how much bigger will be the right size?

There was in such doubt in my mind about what size to get, that I chose to buy two different sizes to try on.  I ordered them from REI, so returning the pair that isn’t an ideal fit, will not be an issue. I bought a size 12 and a size 12.5.  These are way bigger than my measured foot size of 10.5, but the shoes that I have been running in were size 11.5.

The reason I need these shoes quickly, is that I will be using them at SwimRun NC.  There is a lot of elevation change in that race, with much of it downhill.  It was the downhill running that caused issues in my ultramarathon.  I don’t want my toes slamming into the front of the run shoes again.

I will determine which pair is the right size tomorrow.  To do this, I will not only be just putting them on, but I will also briefly run in them on our treadmill. Hopefully, one of these two sizes will fit me well, otherwise I may need to change shoe model or even brand.  I like this particular shoe, so I have my fingers crossed that it doesn’t come to that.
