Today has been a tough day. I did my run workout, but it did not go well. Unlike yesterday, my legs never got any better during the run. In fact, they just felt more and more fatigued as the run progressed.
While there is no doubt that my legs are feeling fatigued from the weekend’s workouts, I think there is more to it. Over the past few weeks, I have struggled to sleep well. This in turn, likely means that I am not getting optimum recovery between workouts.
The body does most of its work to heal stressed muscles, during sleep. Without good sleep, I think I am building up more cumulative fatigue than normal. This reached a peak today, when my body told me ‘enough’.
I texted my coach and told him I needed more recovery. We agreed to modify my schedule for tomorrow. Now, I only have a short active recovery ride, instead of a hard bike session.
The reason I believe I am sleeping poorly, is a recurrence of my acid reflux issues. When I wake in the night, I can feel the effects of reflux. I have therefore decided to undergo a month long, ‘healing’ process.
This ‘healing’ process involves me vigorously controlling my diet, to avoid foods that cause reflux. It typically takes about a month the ‘reset’ my stomach. It’s a tough process, because it means no caffeine, no alcohol, no chocolate and none of a host of other great foods.
The lack of caffeine is also making me tired. It will take a few days, for my body to adjust to the lack of this stimulant. Given I’m feeling sleepy, it is going to be an early night for me. It is just what my body needs.
