Nothing new on race day is great advice. The last thing you need during a race, is unexpected surprises from your gear. With my SwimRun race happening next Sunday, I decided to do my long run today, in my full SwimRun gear set up.
For next week’s race, I will be wearing my Orca swimrun wetsuit, so that is what I wore for my run today. I wore a pair of triathlon shorts under the wetsuit and completed my outfit with my trail shoes. I also wore the socks and compression sleeves that I plan to wear next week.
The thought of running around the local park in this gear made me a little self conscious, so I actually wore a run shirt and run shorts over the top of the outfit. Nobody wants to get arrested for being ‘weird’, as they run the trails in a wetsuit.
I chose to run trails because that is what I will be running in my race. I really enjoyed my run. The main thing I learned during the run was that temperature control is going to be key. It was easy to get hot under the wetsuit, so unzipping it to run was important. If necessary during the race, I can also ‘cab down’. This is where I would completely undo the wetsuit and strip it down to my waist.
I am so glad I chose this approach today. Now, when I go to the start line next week, there will be nothing new on race day…
