I started coaching because I thought that helping others, would be a very rewarding experience for me. I love endurance sports and through coaching, I hope that I am helping others love those sports too.
I had a great day today. It is not often that I am able to meet up with one of my athletes in person, to help them out. Most of my athletes are geographically remote from me, so we typically only meet on rare occasions, like at races. Today however, I was able to meet an athlete in person, to coach them on swim technique.
We met at a local YMCA and after our time at the pool, we sat down for a chat. My athlete had dozens of questions about triathlon and I loved answering them, and sharing my knowledge. We talked about all three sports, but also spent time discussing things like nutrition and race tactics.
As I was leaving at the end of our time together, my athlete said to me “You really love coaching don’t you?”. It made me feel very proud to hear that. Yes… I do love coaching.
Helping others is not only very rewarding, it is a lot of fun too.
