Yesterday, I wrote about my first bike ride in four weeks. Today it was almost five weeks since my last swim, so I was also well overdue for getting back in the pool.
I planned to swim last week, but my usual pool was closed for repairs. Having been out of the pool for too long, I desperately needed to swim before my SwimRun race this weekend. I phoned my gym this morning, to see if the pool repairs had been completed. The answer was… “Not yet!”.
Unfortunately, this left me with no choice but to drive across town to my back up location. The round trip took close to an hour longer than my usual visits to the pool. With my SwimRun race coming up this weekend however, I really didn’t have a choice. I had to get back in the water.
The actual swim workout went quite well. My arms and shoulders felt a little tired afterwards, but nowhere near as tired as I had feared, going into the workout. Luckily, the crux of the SwimRun race this weekend is the run portion. We will spend a lot more time running compared to swimming. My residual swim fitness, from Ironman training, should be fine come Sunday.
My experience today is the one major downsides of swimming. Driving to the pool and back usually takes as much time, or more, as it does to do the actual swim. It is just one of those things that I have to deal with. It is not like I can afford my own pool!!!
