After completing the grades for my bike goals and running goals, it’s now time to grade myself on a final set of goals, that I imaginatively called ‘other’..
1. Be more deliberate and manage nutrition better : A+ I think that, since I set out my list of goals six months ago, this is the one thing that I have changed the most. I am eating really well. At the same time, I am managing my intake to make sure I am sufficiently fueled for my workouts. I am consciously increasing carbohydrate intake on the days leading before hard, long workouts, while easing off ahead of lighter days. The net result is, that I am now leaner than I have been for decades.
2. Get more sleep : B I have been doing well here too. I have focused on going to bed earlier and I would guess I am getting close to an extra hour of sleep each night, compared to this time last year. The only reason this is not graded an “A”, is because lately, my sleep has been interrupted by the acid reflux issues, I wrote about a few days ago.
3. Race more – use short course ‘C’ events to push limits and find ‘failure’ point : No Grade With all of our races cancelled, I can’t really grade myself here. I had planned to register for two short course races in June; both of these races have been cancelled until next year.
I guess my overall grade is probably a B-. Hopefully, when I look back again at the end of this season, I will be doing a little better.
