Chafing from workouts is not an exciting topic, but the reality is, chafing is part of our sport. I am fastidious about taking precautions, but even with the care I take, I still get chafing occasionally.
In my experience, the absolute best substance for prevention of chafing is a spray called TriSlide. It is extremely slick, fragrance-free, water / sweat proof and safe on all fabrics. It’s a liquid silicone based product, that is also safe for use with wetsuits. This is a great feature, because it actually helps get wetsuits on and off.
The only concerns that I have with TriSlide are that it is relatively expensive, and you have to be very careful where you spray it. If the spray gets onto a tile or wooden floor, that surface becomes extremely slick. I mean really slick… you will slip and fall over. For these reasons, I usually limit my use of TriSlide to races, especially those that are wetsuit legal, and I spray it when I am outside if I can.
For every day use during workouts, I use Chamois Butt’r for the bike and also occasionally BodyGlide. I use something for pretty much every workout. These products work great too.
As mentioned however, I still get chafing occasionally. When I do get chafed, I use a product called Sudocrem, to help heal it. Sudocrem is a product we discovered when our kids were very young and suffered from diaper (nappy) rash. It does a miraculous job clearing up rashes and chafing. Our children were so impressed with it growing up, they used to joke it would heal a bullet wound… I doubt it would do that, but the stuff is really, really good. The only downside to it, is that is only available as an imported product in the USA.
You may be wondering why I chose this particular topic today. Simple really, I got some chafing during my long ride on Saturday!!
