Early Morning Swim

I had today off work, as we get ready to celebrate Independence Day tomorrow.  This meant that I was able to head up to Moraine State Park early, to get an open water swim done.

I have relatively few options for open water swimming, and the beaches at the local State Parks are the best choice, but only if you go early.  You have to swim early, in order to get your swim done, before the crowds arrive.

It was a simple 30 minute swim for me today.  No intervals, just swimming.  This proved to be a good choice, because I had a really good swim and had a great ‘feel’ for the water.  What exactly does ‘feel’ mean?

My coach says that swimming is relatively simple.  It’s all about ‘grabbing’ as much water as possible, and pushing that water backwards.  Pushing water backwards is what moves you forwards.  There is obviously a lot more to it than this, but the act of ‘grabbing’ water is what I mean by ‘feel’.

The other way that I know that I am swimming well, is that I start to get fatigued in my lats and upper arms.  If I am working those muscles hard, I am usually swimming well.  Those muscles were getting tired towards the end of my swim today.

The other great thing about my swim today, is that I was able to do it with a new friend.  As part of a program with Pittsburgh Triathlon Club, I am mentoring two new triathletes.  I got to meet one of those athletes for the first time today and it was great to help him out with a few tips.

After my swim, I got changed into my running gear, and did a 45 minute run.  That was not so good, as it had gotten really hot. Still, I got the run done and was finished with both of my workouts for the day by late morning.

Big bike ride tomorrow, to celebrate the 4th July Holiday.  I’ll be leaving early again, so I can try to avoid the heat.
