The pool where I swim, is part of an LA Fitness gym and ever since they re-opened the pool in January, they have implemented new rules as a result of the pandemic. The rules for the pool are very restrictive, if you want to get any kind of swim workout done.
Luckily, up until this week, every time I have gone to the pool, there have been almost no other people swimming. This has meant that I could swim for as long as I like, and complete my workouts.
The situation has changed this week and tonight, I finally fell victim to the rules. About twenty minutes into my workout, when the pool was already full, another swimmer appeared on the pool deck. I had been the first in the pool, so the lifeguard asked me to cut my swim short. Luckily, he knows how long I like to swim and kindly gave me a ’10 minute warning’.
With only thirty minutes of pool time, I was not able to complete my workout. I was doing intervals that included the Tarzan drill, which I hate, but I still didn’t want to get out of the pool. Nonetheless, I did get out, once my extra ten minutes were up.
Earlier on in my triathlon journey, I would have been very frustrated by this experience. Today however, I just shrugged my shoulders and thought to myself… at least I was able to do something. The pool was closed all last summer.
Training doesn’t always go to plan. The key is to not beat yourself up about it… do what you can and move on.
