Working out in extreme heat can be very counterproductive. This is particularly so, when the dew point temperature is very high. This means that there is a combination of high heat and high humidity.
The Dew Point at the time of my workout today, was 73’F and actually reached a high of 76’F, an hour or so later. Anything over 70’F is very oppressive.
Working out in these conditions is so hard on the body, that any gains from the workout are mostly lost, as your body tries to cope with the conditions. I have tried hot workouts many times before and it is hard.
With the weather so hot, I took my workouts indoors today. I had a bike workout and a short run on my schedule. I did them both in my basement. My bike session was a one hour workout, with 12, one minute intervals in Zone 4. I felt strong during the ride, but my breathing is still not 100%. I followed the bike workout, with a thirty minute, Zone 2 run on the treadmill.
I felt good after my workouts. If I had gone outside, I am pretty sure that dew point, would have resulted in a very different feeling. I would probably have ended up feeling very tired. Instead, all is good and I am feeling fresh ahead of another run tomorrow.
