One of the most critical things, to ensure a fast ride on the bike during the race, is comfort. If you are not comfortable when riding in the aero position, you won’t be able to stay in that position for a long time. If you need to sit up all the time to get comfortable, then you lose all benefits of being aero in the first place.
The key to comfort is a really good bike fit, from a professional fitter. These can be a little pricey, but they are the best investment you can make with your bike. Being comfortable and able to pedal with power, while in the aero position, will gain you more speed per dollar, than almost all other investments in equipment.
I rode my bike all summer and was generally very comfortable. Now that I have moved indoors however, I am finding my saddle to be a little uncomfortable. Part of this is because you put more pressure on your butt when indoors. Indoors, you don’t have the pressure of air moving against you, like you do outdoors. That wind resistance from moving through the air, takes just a little bit of pressure off your butt, which helps with saddle comfort.
Given I have many months of indoor riding ahead of me, I am thinking of trying some different saddles, to see if I can find a more comfortable one. You can get test saddles on loan from stores or saddle companies, so you can ‘try before you buy’. This should enable me to try different saddles for my comfort seeking project.
Hopefully, I can find saddle that is just a little better than the one I have now. If I am comfortable, then spending hours on the trainer over the winter, becomes just that little bit more bearable.
