I bought a new pair of Asics Gel Kayano run shoes recently, and I was excited to try them out today. I had a one and half hour endurance long run on my schedule, and the weather forecast showed that the sun was going to shine this afternoon.
So at 2.30pm this afternoon, I stood at the local lake in my new shoes and ready to run. I pushed start on my Garmin watch and began to run. The first part of my route was totally flat and is a great place to warm up the legs ahead of a long run.
As I ran that part of my route, I started to realize that my legs were not feeling that great. They felt really tired. At that point in my run however, I was not concerned. It is not unusual for my legs to feel tired at the start of a run. What normally happens is that after a few miles, the legs warm up and all is good.
Well today was different. My legs never got over the feeling of being tired. My legs felt tired until I completed my run and pushed stop on my Garmin watch.
Even though my run was a bit of a struggle, you know what, I finished the run and I did so at my normal pace for this kind of run. That is what is interesting, despite my legs feeling bad for the whole of the run, you would never know it, if you looked at the data.
So that is the lesson for today. Just because you are feeling bad, it doesn’t mean you cannot perform. Just put the feeling of fatigue aside and keep running.
