I am loving running at high altitude, here at Copper Mountain. On Sunday, I did a fabulous run along the Colorado Trail. Yesterday, I ran along the bike path leading to Vail Pass. This evening, I ran along a different bike path; the one that runs towards Leadville.
The infrastructure for biking and hiking here is superb. The bike trails are basically asphalt roads that are closed to motorized vehicles. They are about twelve feet wide, and very well maintained. Bridges are used to cross creeks and marshy areas. The quality of the path is fantastic, but the views are even better.
The path that I used this evening, ran alongside Ten Mile Creek; a beautiful, fast flowing creek that is apparently full of trout. I chose to run quite late in the day today, so that the temperatures were cooler. This also meant that I pretty much had the bike path to myself. The only downside was that the bugs were became very active after the sun dropped behind the mountains.
I ran for an hour this evening at a very easy pace. I kept my heart rate low and my breathing seemed to be a little easier. This was probably because the grade of this bike path was not as steep, as the one that I ran on yesterday. I am also sure however, that the fact that I have now spent three full days at high altitude, is also helping.
