I talked about my legs being tired in yesterday’s blog. This morning when I woke up, and got out of bed, my quads were genuinely sore and they felt tight.
In days gone by when I got very sore muscles, I used to just leave them alone and rest them. These days however, I find that some proactive ‘maintenance’ helps me recover quicker. Today, I did three things to try and help with the soreness, and as I write this late in the day, I can say that my quads feel much better. Here is what I did.
Firstly, I did some gentle stretching. I didn’t go all out with the quad stretches, because my muscles weren’t warmed up and also because the soreness indicated they were ‘damaged’. I just wanted to relieve some of the tightness, I was feeling.
Secondly, I gently rolled the muscles for about ten minutes. I used a hand held roller to apply the pressure, because I was able to be a little more gentle than foam rolling using my body weight. I would start each session with almost no pressure, and gradually build it up until I was rolling quite hard. I did this three times throughout the day
Finally, I really focused on posture while sitting at my computer for work, and took a lot of breaks to stand up and move around. Sitting all day would probably have been the worst thing I could have done, so moving around a lot was important.
The big test will be tomorrow morning. Hopefully, the soreness will be greatly diminished as a result of the ‘maintenance work’ that I did today.
