A Winter Ride Outside

October to April is indoor riding season in Pittsburgh.  Riding the bike on a trainer, while staring at the TV screen or listening to music is basically the only option.  Unless you get really lucky.

Today, I got really lucky.  The family went out for lunch and while riding home in the car, I happened to look down at the outside temperature …  52’F.  It was 52’F and sunny; that never happens in December and Pittsburgh!!

As I started to think about the possibility of doing my 90 minute bike session, my wife said to me “you should ride outside today”.  That was enough.. decision made.

I have to say I had a blast out there today.  I chose to ride my old road bike rather than unhook my Triathlon bike from the trainer.  I don’t have a power meter on my road bike, so there were no power targets to think about.  I didn’t even wear my heart rate monitor, so there were no zones to think of.  I just rode.

As I was riding around, I started to think about how I might be able to ride outside more in winter.  Unfortunately, the answer came down to investing in more bikes .. I see people on fat tire and mountain bikes all winter in this park.  Well at least I can dream… or maybe I should write a quick note to Santa?

Quick footnote :  My website is pretty basic right now.  I chose to start sharing first, rather than spending time making the website complete before launching the blog.  I’m looking forward to building the website over time into a useful resource for you .. just another part of my ‘life’ that you will get to read about.
