A Very Big Decision That Impacts My Training And Racing

Triathletes are great planners.  They often look ahead for up to 12 months, to figure out what races they want to do. It is what I typically do.  By the time February rolls around, I normally know exactly what races I will be doing for the rest of the year.  This year is different however.  My wife and I made a big decision, that means race planning is out of the window for now.

We are moving to Colorado……

Yes, after almost eighteen years in Pittsburgh, we have decided to move.  Instead of moving to follow a job, like every other time we have relocated, this time we are moving to follow a dream. Now that I am retired, we want to live near the mountains and have decided that Colorado is where we want to be.

Clearly, relocating half way across the country is going to be a big effort and very time consuming.  For this reason, I have put racing on hold for now.  Training is also going to be a challenge, but I am going to do my best to stay in shape during the move.

This week, we made the first big step towards being in Colorado, by committing to sell our house in Pittsburgh. As you can see below, this big decision impacted my workouts this week.

Moving Home Is A Big Decision

We will be packing quite a few of these in the next week or so !!

So within the mayhem of starting the home moving process, what training was I able to do this past week?  Here are the workouts I completed last week:

  • Monday  –  60 Minute Aerobic Run
  • Tuesday  –  Day Off
  • Wednesday  – 55 Minute Run with 35 Minutes at Tempo Effort
  • Thursday  –  50 Minute Easy Recovery Run
  • Friday  –  40 Minute Run with 4 x 4 Minutes at Threshold Effort.
  • Saturday  –  Day Off
  • Sunday  –  Day Off

It was quite a light week of training, but those “days off”, were probably the hardest workouts of the week.  I have been spending 10-12 hours a day, preparing the house to sell.  Lots of moving things around and going up and down stairs.  According to my Garmin, I have averaged over 40 times up stairs and 40 times down stairs per day this past week. I know it was actually a lot more than that, because I have not worn my watch most of the time !!!

This upcoming week, is likely to be even more hectic.  I do plan to run as much as I can, as I think it will provide some alone time to think, and some stress relief too.  I doubt I will ride my bike and I know that I will not swim.  Life is going to be like this for a while, but that is OK.  I can’t wait to ride my new Trek Emonda in the mountains of Colorado.

Threshold Intervals Heart Rate

I did get the heart rate up a little this week… threshold intervals !!
