With all of the technology available to athletes today, it is very easy to gather all sorts of data during workouts and races. The challenge becomes understanding what the data is telling you, or even if the data is meaningful in the first place.
You don’t need to collect or analyze data to enjoy triathlon. You also don’t need to collect or analyze data, to be good at the sport. Some people however, love the data and some are highly motivated by it. For this reason, I continually try to educate myself about the data of triathlon.
I bought and read this book about three to four years ago. Back then, I was new to triathlon and I think a lot of what this book tries to teach, went over my head. These days, I understand a great deal more about this sport, so when I came across this book this afternoon, I decided that I would read it again.
This book is particularly relevant now that I coach athletes. It covers a lot of the metrics that are tracked within the TrainingPeaks application software, that I use with my athletes. I understand these metrics, but am looking forward to their interpretation by Jim Vance, the author of the book and a highly successful, data driven coach.
I’ll share any nuggets I find, in future blog posts.
