On the face of it, my workout today had the potential to be a little boring. I had on my schedule, a two hour, aerobic bike ride. This kind of ride would be fun, if I could do it outside, but with snow on the ground everywhere, I would have to do the ride on the trainer. It was the kind of ride that could be hard to get motivated for.
Having struggled with motivation yesterday, I was surprised this morning, when I woke up and decided that I wanted to get my ride done immediately. I embraced that motivation, got dressed into my bike gear and went downstairs. After a quick cup of coffee, I grabbed a banana and some water and jumped on my bike.
There was no defined structure for my ride, but I chose to introduce some, in order to break up the two hours. After a 30 minute warm up, I got out of the saddle and did a minute of low cadence, big gear work. After another fifteen minutes, I did the same thing, but this time, I did two minutes of work out of the saddle. I did these low cadence intervals every fifteen minutes, and increased the interval length by a minute each time.
I mostly did the ‘out of the saddle’ work, so I could relieve the discomfort I was feeling from sitting in the saddle. At the lower power levels, typical of aerobic riding, I tend to put more weight on my butt, and it gets uncomfortable. A minute or two out of the saddle, fixes this. It helped this morning too and I ended up having a great ride.
By the way, if you are wondering about today’s photo. It shows how I protect my headset from sweat, while riding my bike on the trainer. I wrote all about it here.
